Read up on the various types of DDR SDRAM.
DDRSDRAM.net provides clear information.
PC3200 DDR is the lowest transfer rate in DDR SDRAM chips. It has a frequency of 200MHz, and is also known as DDR400, a measurement of its front side bus (FSB).
Memory may also be noted by its dual in-line memory module, or DIMM. PC3200 DDR SDRAM exists as as a standard 182-pin DIMM, as well as in 172-pin MicroDIMM, and 200-pin SO-DIMM.
RAM must be compatible with the motherboard on the computer, however in some situations the chips may be "underclocked" or "overclocked" as a method of enabling them to work with the motherboard, or even with each other if the chips are different speeds. Aside from PC3200, other transfer speeds include:
Please note: a laptop will typically require memory designed specifically for it, while standard memory is generally made for use on a desktop PC.
